Periocular Skin Cancers
The eyelids’ exposure to sun can produce malignancies, most commonly basal cell carcinoma, followed by squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. The environment of Western Canada can mean UV damage to many eyelids. Fortunately, most lesions on the eyelid are easy to spot. Deciding whether a lesion is cancerous or not typically requires a biopsy, which allows us to take a small piece to examine under the microscope. When skin cancers on the eyelid are caught early, they are often very surgically treatable.
Our surgeons are highly experienced in treatment of periocular tumours and eyelid reconstruction. Our doctors will sometimes work with specialized Mohs’ dermatologists to optimize reconstructive outcomes while minimizing recurrence rate. In more complex cases, we partner with oncologists at the Cross Cancer Institute.
